Fiorentina suffered a disappointing Coppa Italia exit in midweek. La Viola – finalists last season – were eliminated at the semi-final stage after seeing their 1-0 first leg advantage wiped out 4-2 on aggregate against Atalanta in Bergamo on Wednesday night.
Nikola Milenkovic’s red card proved costly with head coach Vincenzo Italiano admitting he had ‘big regrets’ over the sending off, as well as wasted first leg opportunities. Still, Fiorentina are keen to bounce back with another cup semi-final on the horizon.
On Thursday, La Viola will welcome Club Brugge to Florence for the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final and Fiorentina have made it clear they will be prioritising their quest for silverware over Serie A. Italiano has shown a preference to rest and rotate his troops before and after important cup clashes and a similar approach could be in the offing.

So with Fiorentina potentially naming a weakened side for Sunday night’s league showdown with Sassuolo, I’d be happy to oppose the hosts considering their attention may well be elsewhere.
