Newmarket is the stage for the second of five classics in the UK flat season.

The 1000 Guineas at Newmarket is the second of the five classic races held throughout the UK flat season. Run the day after the 2000 Guineas, it is also run over 1 mile on Newmarket's Rowley Mile racecourse.

Let's look at the latest odds, leading runners and date for the race.

1000 Guineas Runners

Here's a look at the leading runners for the race.

Fallen Angel

Narrowly shading the role as favourite in the market is Karl Burke's Fallen Angel. This daughter of Too Darn Hot was most recently seen winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes at the Curragh in September where she beat Vespertilio into second.

Although Vespertilio hasn't raced since, it's interesting to note that she was beaten nearly the same exact distance by the 1000 Guineas second favourite Ylang Ylang (2023 Fillies’ Mille winner).

Fallen Angel ran on well that day to suggest this 1 mile is trip is more than within her reach, and the Moyglare is an equally good trial for the race as the Fillies’ Mile.

Indeed, the 2022 winner Tahiyra went down by 1/2 length in the Classic whilst both Love and Minding followed up their successes at Newmarket.

Fallen Angel is a Newmarket winner herself and although we are yet to see her, she has every chance given she's trained on.

Ylang Ylang

Next up in the market is the aforementioned Fillies’ Mile winner Ylang Ylang for Aidan O'Brien. This daughter of Frankel had a busy juvenile campaign running five times, including two defeats.

One of those was at Newmarket behind Carla's Way but she suffered from a slow start that day and ran on well into 3rd. She couldn't peg back the winner on the good to firm ground but she improved next time when stepped up to a mile.

The soft ground that day undoubtedly helped as well as she kept on strongly to beat Shuwari by 1/2 length, the only horse to have beaten Fallen Angel. She looked all stamina that day so if it came up very quick again, she might be vulnerable.

Dance Sequence

One horse who we have seen this season is Charlie Appleby's Dance Sequence. This daughter of Dubawi was lightly raced at two compared to the above racing only twice.

Both were at Newmarket and both resulted in victories, the second of which coming in the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes in October. She beat Ralph Beckett's Skellet that day by a neck who has since been ruled out for the race. She was last seen at the recent Craven meeting where she went down by a neck in the Nell Gwyn Stakes.

However, that defeat looked excusable given that the winner was more prominent than her in a tailwind and that she looked a difficult ride down the dip. That experience should do her a world of good and she's got every chance.

Ramatuelle

French raider Rametuelle has enjoyed sustained support into a best priced 10/1 recently. She raced five times at two, the last of which being a short neck 2nd to the 119 rated Vandeek in the Prix Morny over 6f.

The winner more than franked the form by following up in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket but Ramatuelle was beaten herself on seasonal debut this year. That was in the Group 3 Prix Imprudence at Deauville where she was beaten 1/2 length by Charlie Appleby's Romantic Style.

Although she seemed to stay the 7f out okay, she looked plenty keen enough and I'm not convinced a step up to a mile will suit. On top of that, she doesn't looked to have physically developed massively from two to three and one worries that others have matured more over the winter.

See The Fire

Andrew Balding's See The Fire also deserves a mention having most recently finished a 1 1/4 length third behind Ylang Ylang in the Fillies’ Mile. She went well from the front that day but just weakened out of it in the final 110 yards.

The forecast good ground should suit her much better and her only win has come at Newmarket on good ground too. She only has 1 1/4 lengths to find and if she's matured over the winter, she has every chance of reversing the form.

1000 Guineas Date & Start Time

The 1000 Guineas is due to be run at 3.40pm on Sunday 5th May at Newmarket's Rowley Mile Racecourse. The race is scheduled to be broadcast live on ITV.

1000 Guineas Tips

On collateral form, Fallen Angel is not all that given the way both Shuwari ties into the Fillies’ Mile picture. That's not always the most sensible way to look at it, but at 11/4 she's opposable.

See the Fire has been beaten twice but both defeats have come on soft ground in group races and I think we may see a different horse on Sunday.

Her sire, Sea The Stars won his 2000 Guineas on good to firm ground as well as a Juddmonte International on the faster surface. At 16/1 she can go well for Andrew Balding.
