Gary O'Neil Liverpool Odds: Wolves manager cut to 6/1 in next manager market

Gary O’Neil’s odds for the Liverpool job have been sliced amid talk that he might be on the Liverpool hierarchy’s list of candidates.

With Xabi Alonso ruled out and Ruben Amorim reportedly unlikely to join, the current Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, has emerged as a potential candidate for the Liverpool job.

His odds have been cut to as short as 6/1 (14% implied chance) which makes him the fourth favourite to replace Klopp in the summer.

He could be found at odds as long as 50/1 (2% implied chance) at various bookmakers at the start of May.

The 40-year-old current Wolves manager can still be found at a best price of 12/1 at Paddy Power and Betfair.

This wouldn’t be O’Neil’s first time coaching the reds, he had a six-month stint as assistant coach for Liverpool U21’s at the start of the 2020/21 season before he moved to Middlesbrough.

But O'Neil's ties to the club don't stop there. He worked under Liverpool's soon-to-be sporting director, Richard Hughes, when he was the manager at Bournemouth. Additionally, he played alongside Hughes during his professional playing career at Portsmouth.

It may also be worth noting that Michael Edwards was chief of analytics of that Portsmouth side and rejoins Liverpool this summer alongside David Woodfine, another from that same Portsmouth setup.

Perhaps a reunion is forming at Anfield?

How Many Teams Has Gary O’Neil Managed

O’Neil is relatively new to first team coaching and only broke onto the scene in the 22/23 season as Bournemouth’s interim manager.

However, he quickly earned the permanent position when he managed to win four and draw four of his first 12 games.

His time there didn’t end as successfully as it began, and he was controversially released by the club at the end of the season.

He then joined Wolves who were considered a potential relegation risk at the start of the season; however, O’Neil has led the Wanderers to a respectable 11th place this year. This achievement is all the more impressive considering the injury crisis he has had to navigate.
